WIP Angel relief

Hello dear friends,

Still working on my Angel relief.
Photo below... In the beginning....Background stone work  finished... laying in the foundation on her face. So much work to do from this point.  I am sure you will agree, she is not attractive as yet,  but she will emerge ( I hope).
As I have mentioned in the past, my fingers are one of my favorite tools.  I do have a metal leather tool I use, a small knife  and a soft paint brush to feather out.
Her eyes at this point need much work, and refine the nose.

She is under a wet paper cloth below

I use this when I am away from the table so they clay will not crack as it dries.
Although,  as hard as I try,  there is always slight cracking,  so I go back and lay in a slurry.
I think you can see that I had painted her eyes..   I tell  you.... After days of looking at her open unpainted eyes,  it was creepy! ..... so I had to paint them.

I have given her a rose wreath to wear.

Part of  her wing on the left and her hair

The relief work is at a stage where I can lay in a light wash of color now.  I have decided to give her a mottled look with the washes.   My hope is that the piece will have more of an ~old world feel~.   At least I hope that is the effect I will end up with.

I have so many WIP photos, but will not bore you with all of them.. I take photos each day of my progress.  I  find that I see my flaws much better when looking through the camera's eye.
I will share the finished relief on my next post..

I would like to wish you all a peaceful and very joyful Thanksgiving.
Even with all the unrest in the world,  we all have something to be thankful for.
I am thankful for my children and family and dear friends, in and out of blogland.

Love and blessings,
Penny

  7. That is so funny that you wanted to paint the eyes cause you were tired of looking at her open unpainted eyes haha. Oh Penny, the Angel is spectacular. And I think you're right giving this piece an 'old world' feel. I could not believe how pretty you made her lips look. I love the rose wreath, and everything about her. I can't wait to see this project when it's finished. It's going to be beautiful.

    love, ~Sheri

  9. Yes penny, the wreath added that bit of soulful beauty to her old world feel in this relief. I see the wash you give it to age and soften the feel your after. I will age with my cashmere tones yet find a faint wash of grey in areas create a shadowing of age. As for what your camera sees I so get what you mean? It picks up far more then the naked eye. Yet those imperfection I adore, it’s the imperfect that makes it feel artistically untouched.

Thank you for visiting my crown post, I’ve added a link in my new wool sheep posting to my Instagram where more these days seem to be taking place. I am going to spend more time this winter with my blog friends yet so hard to keep up with every demanding site now!

I have a new post with wool sheep! They are not felted, but of Cartapesta plastering and the wrapped in cloth to then apply a sheared blanket of wool. You will see the close up imperfections and the wash of age and decay of old world.

How grand it would be to sit and create side by side right? So much beauty in your relief. And your holiday post is beautifully touching.

    Thank you dear,
    See you soon.

    Xx
    Dore

  10. Penny, THis is an interesting process, I never realized how this was done. The wreath around her head is simply beautiful and her lips are an indication of her facial loveliness that is soon to emerge. I think your relief work is some of your very best for a multi-talented artist.
