Please meet Chester the squirrel.. Lovingly needle felted in wool.. I have more hours and days than I care to mention in his creation, but enjoyed every moment.. I am so happy with my new needle felting wood tool. It holds up to 4 needles in a very small circumference... This is good because I work small, not miniature, but small. It has really saved my wrist.. I find that I can needle felt a little longer and do not wind up at days end with a sore wrist. .
He stands about 7 1/2" to the tip of his tail. I gave him acrylic inset eyes and sculpted his hands and feet in paper clay, then painted them and sealed.
With Chester, I really wanted to capture more of a realistic look... I don't think I am there just yet, but close.. I am happy with him.
I thought he should have a nut or something to hold onto, so I saved an apricot seed for him..
If you would like to visit his auction, click on Ebay
In progress photos below
I made a wire armature of covered wire then wound wool yarn around the armature. It is then that I started needle felting with the natural wool
Looks pretty silly
My reference material... I don't know what he looks like at this point.
I kept looking at the hands and feet thinking how am I going to do the little fingers.
So I sculpted them of paper clay glued and slipped them over the wool hands and feet.
His tail was the last part I made, so as not to muss it up...
Here I thought he looked much like a little hamster,
Finished
I hope you enjoyed.
Thank you so much for wandering over...
Blessings,
Penny

Chester is uber adorable and I think you captured his true essence. Happy Hearts are Creative Hearts...

Dessa Rae
Thank you so much Dessa Rae.. Well, with your amazing talent for sculpting with clay, I see not reason why you could not needle felt.. I think you should give it a go. it's not hard, it just very time consuming.

T.D
How sweet of you to drop in Dutchess.. THANK YOU! Give Miss Moussie and Elvira a hello for me!
DeleteHi Penny, we Dutch people have a saying: "you have put your whole heart in" this work, it is fantastic. The squirrel looks realistic, I think we all do a lot of practising before we are satisfied with the result. But you have succeeded with this adorable squirrel :D!
ReplyDeleteI wish you many beautiful projects of needle felted works like this one!
Have a nice sunday, Penny.
Hugs, Ilona
Dear Ilona,
DeleteHow very kind of you to say so... I really wanted to capture a realistic look.. I usually take in progress photos, but only a few, as with this one... There were many transformations along the way to completion, but I thought it would be fun to share a few.
Thank you so much for visiting.
I JUST ABOUT SWALLOWED MY TONGUE!!!!!!! Oh dear....Wait.....
ReplyDeleteI have to go to you via email.
But THIS IS UNBELIEVABLY REALISTIC, PENNY!
You never, ever disappoint. Even in your in-progress or rather, "experimental" stages, you always work so hard until you get it just right. And the satisfaction that YOU end up with is of the most importance. But this little guy is unbelievably charming. I NEED TO SHOW HIM TO RUBEN! Back in a few...Anita
Oh Anita, you are so sweet! MERCI dear friend.. Your encouraging words always give my heart a smile!
Deletebisous!
Penny
O wowwwww....love Chester Penny !!!...wowwww....so sweet....love from me...xxx..
ReplyDeleteOh Ria, I love your watering pots! I think the green is my favorite, and of course the white one!
DeleteThank you so much for your sweet words about Chester.
Penny, he is tremendously realistic -- I think you did a masterful job -- and rather large, so that had to take a long, long while. Your details are excellent. And I really appreciate the step-by-step. It makes one who doesn't do this art form a much greater appreciate of what it takes (and why they are a bit pricey -- and should be!)
ReplyDeleteOh Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteYour sweet words this morning have made my day.. Thank you so much for your visit and kind words about Chester.. I really enjoyed this one.
ONE MORE GANDER at this little angel. Bravo again my friend; you have captured our little friends to a TEA (says Tea Rat!) LOVE!
ReplyDeleteOh Anita, you are just so encouraging..
DeleteThank you dearest!

ReplyDeleteSquirrel hugs to you!
DeleteThis is so magical to me. In the Fairyland I had a squirrel and his name was Chester! He ran through the Fairyland like it was a race track, no kidding. Sometimes he would follow the natural path the humans would take (a mile long!) and other times he would jump from tree to tree but his favorite place to be was on this little blue and white lighthouse my dad made.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, he needs more nuts for the winter, I should send him some Washington walnuts! He'd be full for the winter!
Precious little guy and fun to see the process of how you created him. Love it!
Greetings dear Jackie,
DeleteHow sweet of you to visit..
How funny is that! You had a squirrel named Chester too?
Thank you so much Jackie for your kind words. I should have taken more WIP photos. I always get so involved that I forget to do so..
