Tea Rat meets Rattus

A while back,  Anita, of Castles Crowns and Cottages asked me if I would re-create  Tea Rat from her illustration. Of  course I would be honored, I said..  When she received dear Tea Rat she asked that I also bring Rattus to life in wool  from her delightful illustrations. Would you say no? What fun I had with Rattus and Tea Rat.. Daily conversations went on as I needle felted..  Tea Rat was very polite, as was Rattus, but oh my could he talk your ear off!  What a wonderful journey this was...

  3. Dear Penny.....and Anita, what a lovely collaboration of you both :D! The results of your work are fantastic, Penny. Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures, from you both! I have a question for you: how can you needle felt on a wire skeleton (I don't know the correct word for this body of wire ;)) without the breaking your felting needle, Penny? Don't the needles become blunt from this work on a wire?
Anyway.......I LOVE your work and the drawings from Anita :D!!
    Blessings, Ilona

    1. Good question!

As you can see in one of the photos, I wrap the wire with yarn, then wrap wool around and then I start needle felting. I start out going very slow and careful so as to not hit the wire with the needle... Once I have built it up a little, I can go faster.. Not to say that I have never broke a needle.. I have broke a few over the years, but I just pull it out and get another felting needle..
      Aren't Anita's Illustrations wonderful!

  5. Dear Penny, you are a wonderful artist. Anita and I love your renditions of Tea Rat and Rattus. They continue to talk without let up in speed or volume ever since Rattus arrived to home by...uh...shall we say, by air. Perfect capture of the character of these...well...characters.
    Bless you my friend.

  8. AHHHHHHHHHHHH...Here, finally, "properly."

Penny, this is so fun. I love my teaching job, I am a linguistic and lover of French, but let me tell you, if there was a way to make a living by having this kind of fun, I would be there in a heart beat! How you take an illustration, or an animal from nature and capture all the correct contures is beyond me. It has to be a gift from above that is meant just for you. Yes, there are fantastic artists out there, and I admire all of them, but not many people can CAPTURE "cute" and contain it in a piece of art.

We love Tea Rat and Rattus, and since Rattus's stay in hospital (loved that fun play on Nowhere) Tea Rat has acquired a new pet....a very large Mother Goose! And look at Rattus's face...he is bewildered, again, by his colleague.

Many years (God, please grant us that) of more fun to come.

    LOVE YOU!

  10. It's hard to decide which I love most -- the inspiration pieces or the finished piece! They go hand in hand. Oh, Rattus is so very dapper! Sigh -- your talent never ceases to amaze me, Penny. You and Anita are a great combo! And I see books in the future...!

  11. Penny,
I am sooooooo captivated by your amazing talent to take wire and wool and make such lovable and magical animals. Anita's artwork is packed full of personality and marvelous imagination. You took drawing's and created Tea Rat and Rattus in 3D and now they are treasured characters who seem alive! That just totally amazes me!
Anita had shared photos of them with me and Penny she could not be more thrilled.

  12. PENNY! Oh dear one, thanks for coming by the blog.....see how Tea Rat and Rattus's forms have captured your readers? I have always believed that the flat page is not enough for me...nope. I have always envisioned anything I write or draw to jump out of the page, and you have started that.

We are going to have some fun in Nowhere, let me tell you. Rattus does look a bit miffed at having to deal with a LARGE goose in the house!!!!!!!

    LOVE YOU!

  17. Penny,
It was so fun seeing all the stages of making Tea Rat and Rattus. I bet Anita was so thrilled when she saw them. They are so cute, and you had a great illustration from her to go by. I love the little red vest on Rattus hehehe. It's amazing what you start with and end up with. I think my favorite picture is of them having tea together.

    You both are so talented.

    Love,
