Work with what you have and make it work

When I started refinishing my kitchen cabinets in mid July I knew it would be alot of work, but had no idea how much...  Sanding, prime, paint.. Take the tarnish off the handles then dry brush them white white enamel..  Put up rope molding and cut and install baseboard.....  I could here my beloved saying, measure twice, cut once,  Penny... I know he would be proud... Proud that I actually accomplished it..  Although it is not by any means elegant, it is home... Humble and fresh and new to me. I am very pleased with it..

Well,  you know how that goes,  you do one project and then you look around and say, oh... I don't like the way the backsplash looks now.. So,  I changed that also... The bricks on the backsplash are hand painted.. Then I wanted to paint the backsplash above the stove..  I finished today..   Something in keeping with the colors in my entryway mural..   In a week or so when it has cured, I will give it all a clear coat.

Then I am looking at the kitchen windows and a little light blub went off... so now I am doing a faux stained glass design with Gallery glass paints and leading..  It is not finished as yet but I will share a photo of WIP...
Outside of that,  the kitchen is done for now...  The walls will be next, but I am going to wait a while on that...

Photo below is the faux stained glass i am working on..  Long way to go.. Will be nice not to view the power lines out the window..

Before.... Stove side..
I can't believe I did not take a before photo of the kitchen wall, but the cabinets were the same. See the tile backsplash?  I changed that out also.
Look below the bottom cabinets... See the dark area? I will assume this has been there since the house was built.. It's carpet...  I ask you, who puts carpet up as a baseboard?
So off it came..

I pulled out my enamel tile paint and created a little niche above the stove after I finished the painted brick work... In about a week or so when the paint has cured, I will put a clear coat over the entire backsplash...
Close up of the roses and vase.

A little wine, bread and grapes

And there you have it.
The painted brickwork goes around on the right.

Finished for now.
I put up rope molding above the top cabinets, but you can not see it very well.  The baseboard was a challenge, but I was able to cut it, notch it and put it in.

This is on the sink wall..  Bottom drawer...  I guess when they put the cabinets in in 1963  they left concrete pieces all over the floor under the drawer.. Who knew?  I have never pulled the drawers out.. I have only been in this house for 5 years..  Only took a minute to clean it up.

I was at this point when I realized I had not take a before photo of the sink wall.
Next I removed the door and drawers, to paint the base..  Then removed the handles and started on the rest.. I could only do a few a day, which explains why it took me so long..  There is that horrid carpet basebord again.

All done

Now on to the back splash WIP

I am pleased with it.

Finished...

The only thing left to do is paint the walls.. I will leave that for a while.
A little hard to see,  I put in spindle legs in front of the sink..

When I complete the windows it should look nice... The colors for the windows are peach, white, amber and clear.. This photo was taken before I started the windows.

Thank you for taking time to wander over for a visit..
Love and blessings,
Penny

  8. Dear Penny,

The makeover of your kitchen is fabulous and know how much work goes into it - we are still working on our lounge. Well done for such a great job and love the mural of the wine, bread and roses. Amazing to get rid of the brown wood and have a new, clean white look. Also love the stained glass.

    Have a great week
    Hugs

  9. Penny, I bet your husband would be oh so proud of this accomplishment. I am sure he was an angel on your shoulder all through-out. White is always so cheery and fresh.Your trompe l'oeil is a perfect fit and adds the cozy touch. Now, you can sit down, with a glass of that wine, some good cheese and bread, and toast your masterpiece with Bebe!

  17. Hi Penny, Love Love what you did, what a neat idea, love your mural and perfect spot and the colors of the brick is my favorite I love the Tuscany style. Changing Your cabinets to white really brighten up that area, everything looks so gorgeous, cant wait to see that window it already looks amazing. I cant wait to start my insides also, my dining room is all dark furniture and I want to brighten it up also- but summer is just way too short to get things done, I wish we at least had a few more months before the colder weather comes---Thanks for sharing your renovation love it!!!! Sincerely, Jonny

  21. Oh yes, work with what we have. That is an awesome thought for the day as I intend to repaint gnomes today. I had intended to do this at the start of summer but working 46-48 hrs a week did not leave much time for painting gnome caps.

Dearest Penny, can you tell me why my comments will not take? I am trying to comment under Google as I have always done. Should I do open ID or what? I have no idea what happened!

Thank you for being there for me always, you are an awesome friend, just what I've always needed.

In memory of my little Misha, I adore the picture you painted for me everyday. The beautiful thing about the picture is it really reminds me of our last month together and walks in the field. As you know, I'm hurting with my little Sadie Mae now not doing well. Oh, how these little creatures wind around our heart and we never want to let them go. I'm praying for her healing.

    Love to you!

Wishing you a splendid day, dear friend!!

  26. Penny...I love the transformation you did! I love white cabinets and did the same thing with my kitchen cabinets about 3 years ago. I love it! That faux painting you did really adds a beautiful touch to your kitchen. Perfect...nice job!!! ;-)

  27. Penny, you have done an amazing job and how satisfying that must be! I imagine that as you started it seemed an impossible project, but you did it! My mom used to say, "Yard by yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, it's a cinch." Saying it now it seems a bit silly, but it has been on the tip of my tongue every time I have faced an "insurmountable" task.

    Congratulations!
    Genie
